Feed the Need: Public Food Sharing Initiative in Hyderabad

A thoughtful solution by IAS officer HariChandana to address hunger using surplus food donations.

Feed the Need is a public food-sharing initiative launched in Hyderabad under the leadership of IAS officer HariChandana. The concept involves placing accessible refrigerators at key locations across the city, filled with surplus food donated by citizens and restaurants. Individuals in need can freely access this food, promoting both sustainability and compassion.

Highlights

  • Accessible Refrigerators Across the City: In partnership with NGO Apple Home, GHMC installed fridges at metro stations, hospitals, and markets. Donated meals and snacks are organized into vegetarian and non-vegetarian sections for clarity.
  • Community Reach: Between January and July 2019, the program reportedly served close to 100,000 people (source citation needed). Though the target was 100 fridges, only a few remain due to maintenance hurdles.
  • Collaborative Management: GHMC provided space and electricity, while Apple Home ensured food safety, cleanliness, and regular maintenance.

Challenges

  • Maintenance Decline: By 2021, many refrigerators became inoperative due to power and service issues. Some were removed after falling into disrepair.
  • Impact of COVID-19: The pandemic disrupted volunteer involvement and upkeep routines, leading to a significant drop in active units. A few fridges are still operational, with calls from citizens for program revival.
