Hari Chandana Dasari may be new in her role as Nalgonda District Collector, but she brings substantial relevant experience to bear when it comes to voter registration and election awareness campaigns. Her latest directives for intensive drives to enroll graduate voters for the upcoming MLC polls build on her significant work in previous positions.
In her previous roles as an administrative officer in various districts of Telangana, Chandana spearheaded creative campaigns to register new voters and motivate voting during both national and local elections. Leveraging art, culture and technology, she engaged communities – especially youth and women – across remote rural areas. Her campaigns featured scroll paintings, street plays, competitions, cyclothons as well as social media outreach.
One particularly successful awareness drive was the ‘Democracy Bicycle Rally’ held in half a dozen mandals of Wanaparthy, covering over 100 villages. The cyclists, donning special t-shirts and caps, performed nukkad nataks at periodic stops, distributing pamphlets on the value of each vote while playing the voter registration anthem song ‘Maa Ooru Maa Badi’ composed specially for this initiative.
As a result of her well-strategized, grassroots campaigns focusing on no-voter-left-behind, the several assembly segments she oversaw recorded over 90 percent turnout, including those with significant tribal populations.
Acknowledging her efforts, the Election Commission presented Chandana the Silver Medal for effective election management during her Wanaparthy tenure. The collectorate and district officials who worked closely with her recall not just her creative thinking but also her hands-on leadership getting on the field herself including for late night mobilization calls during the poll season.
In her present role as Nalgonda District Collector, Chandana can leverage this substantial experience of voter mobilization as she prepares for the upcoming MLC elections. Having worked in relatively smaller districts earlier, she understands well the need for region-specific strategies while also adding her own innovative and action-oriented drive. The graduate constituency polls covering several districts do pose an organizational challenge but Chandana’s track record should stand her in good stead.
Her instructions to officials on identifying polling stations, distributing electoral rolls and verification documents as well as utilizing art, culture and technology to motivate new voter registration reveal a multi-pronged approach based on learning from the past. As she stated, ensuring no graduate voter is left behind needs the concerted effort of all government departments. And Chandana herself promises to lead from the front.
