During her municipal leadership stint, Hari Chandana frequently witnessed stark paradoxes – pockets of people battling hunger amidst wastage from restaurants/housing societies. This dichotomy birthed Hyderabad’s pioneering “Feed the Need” initiative under her stewardship facilitating donation of excess food through publicly accessible refrigerators city-wide.

Tackling Food Insecurity & Wastage

Despite Hyderabad’s tag as a food lover’s paradise, inadequate affordability prevented low income groups from partaking in its culinary richness. Hari Chandana focused on mitigating this divide by tapping disposal-bound food – aligning welfare, resources and awareness. #SocialImpactAward

Spreading Community Refrigerators

Drawing inspiration from global apps connecting retailers with hunger relief agencies, Hari Chandana facilitated placement of donated refrigerators from corporates at accessible civic locations. Residents/outlets could deposit excess, untouched homemade/restaurant food in good condition for the underprivileged.

App-Based Operations & Monitoring

To ensure refrigerators function seamlessly, Hari Chandana developed a complementary app ecosystem integrating demand-supply data regarding food availability, community usage and accountability metrics through IoT. This boosted reliance from donors/users while keeping stock refreshed.

Building Collaborative Circles

Hari Chandana tapped citizen groups, NGOs to spread concept ownership for regular food contributions/redistribution.Restaurants were encouraged to redirect unserved buffet food instead of wasting it. Gradually community circles sustaining refrigerators organically emerged- serving hundreds daily.

Originating from her unique empathy towards food security, Hari Chandana pioneered Hyderabad’s “Feed the Need” program through collaborative approach centering localized hunger mitigation – setting benchmarks on holistic urban governance. #GovernanceInnovation #SmartCities
