Wildlife Guardian Developing Urban Forests And Lakes To Expand Green Cover Habitats

As Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation commissioner, Hari Chandana focused extensively on expanding green spaces by rejuvenating freshwater bodies and developing wildlife conservation zones. Reviving Freshwater Ecosystems 

Hari Chandana oversaw large-scale restoration of Hyderabad’s historical lakes and tank complexes through desiltation, strengthening bunds and scientific de-weeding. Catchment areas got afforested to improve groundwater recharge. The revived lakes soon began attracting native and migratory bird species. 

Creating Urban Wildlife Sanctuaries 

Degraded forest patches within city limits offered potential wildlife habitats. Hari Chandana facilitated notified protected Urban Wildlife Sanctuaries sites spread over 3200 acres. Strict conservation efforts saw thriving habitats with slender loris, jungle cats, pythons, herons, mongooses etc. spotted across areas earmarked. 

Building Climate Resilient Green Infrastructure 

Hari Chandana focused on linking the rejuvenated water bodies through native vegetation corridors like Neem, Peepal, Banyan etc. This facilitiated avian connectivity while the increased tree cover improved air quality and urban heat island mitigation – boosting Hyderabad’s climate resilience. 

Fostering Biodiversity Mainstreaming 

Hari Chandana engaged student volunteers and civil society in nature trails, birdwatching camps across the sanctuaries and lakes.
